Secret spots

Secret spots

One of my favourite things to do is find the secret spots in destinations that not many people know about. Like everyone, I will always head to Pinterest when planning a trip where you can find so many “10 things to do in …”, “My top tips for visiting …” and “Must see places in …”

But I love finding where the local head to, or places away from the bigger crowds. You can find them even in the biggest cities, here are a few of my own – let me know if you have found any.

1 – Naples harbour/marina

Naples city is full of tiny streets with bustling restaurants, but none of them have very good views. The waterfront is largely industrial, until you get to the area around Castle Dell’OVO. We came upon some steps down to the water and found a part of Naples quite different the rest. There is a small marina to look at the boats, restaurants, cafes and little cobbles squares. Perfect for lunch, dinner or just drinks. You also get a lovely view the castle and over to Vesuvius.

2 – Beach in Montenegro

Tivat is built on the water and has the most amazing marina with enormous boats but only a tiny beach which could get busy. We wanted something a bit quieter to enjoy the crystal clear waters, so walked out of town towards the more residential part. We came across a beach with no one else on it, it had a beautiful little pier for us to put out bags down on, and we were surrounded by mountains and greenery. The water was insanely clear and filled with tiny fish. We were there for a couple of hours any only saw 4 other people!

3 – Quieter entrances to Disneyland Park

The entrance to Disneyland Park is underneath the pink Disneyland hotel and the paths naturally guide you to the middle where the main entrances are which can get very busy, But on each side there are also entrances/exits that not many people know about. A few extra steps is definitely worth it!

4 – Tubing in Pennsylvania

We were staying with friends in New Jersey when we did this, we drove to the ‘base camp’ at Stockton, NJ then they take you to the drop off point in a converted American school bus along with the enormous rubber rings you will float down the Delaware river in. The scenery is incredible with New Jersey on one side of the river and Pennsylvania on the other. We went a long time ago, before waterproof phones were a thing so have hardly any photos, but the memories are strong from an incredible experience.

5 – Rural fair in France

We went to one in Le Pizou but most villages have them over the summer months so do some research online or ask a local! This one had long trestle tables set out in the main square, with food stalls all around the outside and a stage for live music. The children were entertained with fun fair games and playing with friends and the when we were there the music wasn’t just on the stage. The musicians were up on the tables signing and getting everyone involved. They often only accept cash and you may also need to take your own cutlery and plates – each one is different.

Have you found any places like this? Let me know!
